Mandatory Qualifications
Interns must be 16 years old by June 10th, 2025. River City High School students must have completed at least one course in one of WUSD’s Career Technical Education Pathways. View qualifying courses here. Yolo High School and Washington Middle College students must have a recommendation form filled out by a teacher or counselor. All participants must have also participated in or watched a recording of an online informational session about the internships offered by the Home Run team.
Responsibilities
The intern position will split their time between helping at our Riverfront Urban Farm in The Bridge District of West Sacramento on Mon-Wed-Fri and helping on our Mobile Farmers Market truck on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. 15 hours will be at Riverfront Farm are Mon, Wed, and Fri from 7:30am-12:30pm. Five hours will be working the Mobile Farmers Market truck on Tues and/or Thurs. We will work with the intern to create a mobile market schedule that works for them on Tues and Thurs. If the intern is flexible, there could be weeks where we need more help at the market and less on the farm to reach their 20 hrs.
As a Farm Intern, the candidate will assist the Farm Manager/CFP Coordinator with duties involved with running a small, urban farm from field maintenance, seed saving, pest & weed management, repairing & installing irrigation, bed preparation, transplanting, succession planting, seed starting, harvesting, logging produce and produce packing.
As a Market Intern, the candidate will assist the CFP Coordinator with operations related to running the mobile farmers market from packing and prepping produce for market, restocking shelves, reaching out and handing over bags of produce to customers, weighing and bagging produce, crowd-control, produce quality check and to closing the market, cleaning up the truck and breakdown.

We are most interested in a candidate who is curious and eager to learn about their local food system.

Intern will learn the environmental, economic and community health benefits of regenerative farming and local food systems.
Intern will learn how to persevere when there is hard work. They will learn good communication and customer service skills. And most importantly, how to grow their own food!
Special Project
There are many project ideas that the candidate could select. The Farm Manager/CFP Coordinator will work with them one-on-one to assess their skills and interests to determine a project that fits. If the candidate is good at working with their hands, they could build something for the farm or take lead of 1 of the 5 blocks to plant, maintain the plants, flip beds, repair irrigation, and manage the pests/weeds. If they are good at social media and are highly creative, they could create a weekly digital marketing campaign, take photos or document their experience through photography & videography. If they are good at writing, we need help organizing a SOP manual for working the mobile market truck.
Additional Information
When working at Riverfront Farm, the intern will be on the farm from 7:30-12:30 M-W-F. We start when the temperatures are cool so we can finish before it gets too hot. The intern will be outside this entire time and must be okay with being outdoors doing farm tasks for this entire time (breaks are encouraged). When working the Mobile Farmers Market, the intern will be in our warehouse in the morning getting the food ready for market, then on the truck selling the food and at the end of the day breaking down.
