Mandatory Qualifications

Interns must be 16 years old by June 10th, 2025. River City High School students must have completed at least one course in one of WUSD’s Career Technical Education Pathways. View qualifying courses here. Yolo High School and Washington Middle College students must have a recommendation form filled out by a teacher or counselor. All participants must have also participated in or watched a recording of an online informational session about the internships offered by the Home Run team.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and Ensuring Safety: Watching over the children to ensure their safety at all times, both indoors and outdoors. This involves maintaining a safe environment and quickly responding to any emergencies.

  • Assisting with Daily Activities: Helping with daily routines, such as feeding, changing diapers, helping children with toileting, and assisting with nap times.

  • Engaging in Play and Learning Activities: Organizing and leading activities that promote physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development. This could include games, arts and crafts, reading, and educational exercises.

  • Supporting Social and Emotional Development: Helping children interact with one another, fostering positive relationships, and guiding children in resolving conflicts and expressing their emotions appropriately.

  • Maintaining Cleanliness and Organization: Keeping the environment clean and organized, which might include cleaning toys, ensuring hygiene practices, and tidying up after activities.

  • Communicating with Parents or Guardians: Updating parents on their child’s progress, behavior, and any issues that arise during the day.

  • Providing Emotional Support: Offering comfort and reassurance to children as needed, especially during transitions or challenging moments.

In general, you will support the lead teacher by helping create a safe, nurturing, and educational environment for the children.

About the Business

We are a large in home childcare/preschool. We are an early childhood education program with mixed age groups from 2-6 years old. We focus on play based and curriculum learning.

Learning outcomes

  • The intern will learn how to effectively manage and engage with children in a group setting, ensuring their safety and well-being while promoting positive behaviors and development. This includes skills such as understanding child development, implementing age-appropriate activities, and addressing individual needs in a childcare environment.

  • The intern will learn to communicate effectively with both children and their parents, providing updates on children's progress and handling any concerns with professionalism and empathy. This skill is crucial for maintaining strong relationships with families and ensuring that children receive the best care possible.

  • The intern will develop teamwork and collaboration skills by working alongside caregivers and other staff members to ensure smooth operations within the childcare environment. This includes learning how to contribute to a supportive and efficient team, coordinate tasks, and maintain a positive work atmosphere.

  • Time Management and Multitasking: The intern will learn to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously, such as preparing activities, assisting with meals, and handling children’s needs, all while maintaining a structured and organized environment.  

  • Conflict Resolution: The intern will gain experience in managing and resolving conflicts between children, helping them learn how to navigate disagreements and fostering peaceful resolutions in a childcare setting.  

  • Problem-Solving: The intern will develop problem-solving skills by addressing unexpected challenges, such as managing a child’s behavior, handling emergencies, or adapting activities to fit the needs of different children.

Special Project

Plan and organize activities: They will create a weekly schedules, outlining various activities for each day, including games, crafts, stories, group exercises, and outdoor play. The intern will take into account the children's interests and preferences to keep them engaged and excited about the plan.

Additional Information

This position is M-F, hours vary but will be within the hours of 8:00am-5:30pm with an hour lunch break.
